Phil Hellmuth nearly misses Day 2a of WSOP ME

Phil Hellmuth made perhaps his first major misstep of the 2011 World Series of Poker on Monday, as the man leading the Player of the Year race was nearly blinded away after a very late arrival for Day 2a of the WSOP Main Event.

Hellmuth is known for being fashionably late on Day 1 of the WSOP, usually arriving in some over the top getup, but a Day 2 late arrival had his friends and colleagues wondering where the Poker Brat was. As it turns out, Hellmuth was sleeping in his hotel room, not even realizing he was playing on Day 2a!

According to the gossip at the Rio, an astute Mike Matusow called the hotel Phil was staying at who sent security up to Hellmuth’s room to find him, and I’ll let Phil’s Twitter account take over the account from there:

Security broke into my room, I’m like, “What’s going on?!?” SGuard says, “You’re playing in the World Series of Poker today.”

I jump out of bed, dress, and run down to my car. Didn’t know you could drive 75 on side roads!! I Thought I played Day 2 Tuesday…

Never crossed my mind that I played today!! Started $11,800: 1 hr 40 min late + had $6,975, OUCH!! Changed Sunday to Sat to do charity event

Hellmuth managed to keep his WSOP hopes alive by chipping-up to an impressive 64,900 stack by the end of the night, which while still short, is quite amazing considering the circumstances of the day.
