Poker Hall of Fame Changes Requirements

The Poker Hall of Fame has had one of the most stringent induction processes a person could find. Needing 75% of the vote to be inducted, most years saw only one, sometimes but rarely two, players gain entry to the extremely exclusive club of professional poker players and poker magnates.

The new process allows for two nominees to be inducted as long as they receive a majority (which is almost a certainty). The new rule should help many deserving poker players get on the fast track to entry in the Hall of Fame without watering down the honor.

There are many deserving players waiting in the wings, which may have passed on before they were inducted, especially as a new crop of top players comes up behind them. Players like Tom McEvoy, Erik Seidel, and others may have been pushed aside as Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, and other top players come up for consideration. And then the next crop of top players would enter the picture, like Patrik Antonius, Tom Dwan and Bertrand Grosspieller.

I’d like to see the guidelines for nomination a bit more clear, like the other sports use. One rule I’d like to see incorporated is that poker players must be active participants in major tournaments or high stakes cash games for a minimum of 20 years. This would give the previous generation a chance to elect their best before the younger generations come up for nomination.
