Sailor Roberts & Eric Drache inducted into Poker HOF
Amid all the World Series of Poker headlines and the hype about the upcoming relaunch of Full Tilt Poker — with the special promotions and poker bonuses that the site will offer—there was other news coming out of Las Vegas on Tuesday, as Brian “Sailor” Roberts and Eric Drache were inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
The ceremony was held prior to the resumption of the final table, with fellow Poker Hall of Famer Crandell Addington giving the induction speech and accepting the honor for Roberts who passed away in 1995. Another Hall of Famer, Bobby Baldwin, introduced Eric Drache, one of the men who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make poker what it is today, with Drache quipping, “for those of you under 65, I’m Eric Drache!”
Roberts and Drache were among ten finalists this year, beating out other deserving players including Chris Bjorin, David Chiu, Thor Hansen, George Hardie, Jennifer Harman-Traniello, John Juanda, Tom McEvoy, and Scotty Nguyen.
Eric Drache is not known so much for playing poker (although he is most certainly no slouch at the tables) but is better-known for his achievements behind the scenes, working in various positions in casinos and card-rooms. Drache is credited for inventing satellite tournaments, working to expand the WSOP, and even creating the Poker Hall of Fame itself.
Brian Roberts was one of the early road-gamblers; travelling the countryside with the likes of Amarillo Slim and Doyle Brunson before settling in Las Vegas. The cash game specialist won the WSOP Main Event in 1975 (one of his two WSOP bracelets) but sadly missed the poker boom, passing away in 1995.
