Tropicana closes Jamie Gold Poker Room
It seems that the Jamie Gold experiment performed by the Tropicana in Las Vegas, Nevada proved unsuccessful, as not long after renaming the poker room after the polarizing 2006 World Series of Poker Champion the Tropicana has released Gold from his contract and is now closing their poker room.
In all, a mere seven moths transpired between the Jamie Gold Poker Room opening and the closure, with a number of odd, and sparsely attended, promotions sprinkled throughout –the Jamie Gold Poker Room featured everything from “celebrity” tournaments to high-priced poker training sessions with Jamie Gold himself.
Gold may be a big name in the poker world, but the name comes with an awful lot of baggage, not only for his controversial run to the WSOP Main E vent title in 2006, but also for his dealings after the win, as well as what the poker community sees as his lack of poker skill in general. While the average fan views Gold as some brash-talking experienced poker pro, the poker community views him as the recipient of the biggest beneficiary of run-good in the history of poker.
According to an article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Tropicana released the following statement regarding the closure of the poker room: “As part of our continuing transformation of Tropicana Las Vegas, we have decided to close our poker room in order to move forward with our construction plans for that section of our property. The hard work by our outstanding team members in the poker room has not gone unnoticed and we are currently seeking alternative opportunities for them at Tropicana Las Vegas.”
There is no word yet on what the Tropicana has planned for the now empty space (if history is any indication the Jamie Gold Poker Room will soon have some new banks of slot machines or some other type of betting sites) which previously housed eight cash game poker tables and 30 or so tournament tables in an adjacent room where the Tropicana hosted daily tournaments and low to mid-limit cash games.
Gold recently appeared on 22Q Ironman Charity Podcast at www.vegaspokerradio.com where he discussed his time at the Tropicana, saying he was happy for the experience, but that not everyone involved with the project was on board, and wanted the room to be successful. Gold also went into great detail in the controversy surrounding his $12 million winnings from the 2006 WSOP, where he was sued by a backer for not paying out his percentage of the winnings –Gold claimed the issue was not over the winnings, but over who would be responsible for the taxes on those winnings.
