WSOP Notebook: Doyle out and in, 1-outers, drunks and more
The final starting of the day of the 2012 World Series of Poker Main E vent is officially in the books and with over 3,400 entrants playing on Day 1c there were plenty of stories coming out of the Rio. Here is a look at some of the more interesting stories and gossip from Monday’s action.
Doyle throws in the towel and then comes out of retirement
It appeared that Doyle Brunson was going to miss his first WSOP Main Event since his boycott of the WSOP years ago (when Becky Binion took the WSOP over) after he Tweeted that he was too tired from playing cash games and didn’t want to deal with the long WSOP days. But the Godfather of Poker had a change of heart at some point on Monday, and thanks to late registration Doyle played Day 1c of the WSOP Main Event.
Doyle made it through Day 1c, bagging-up over 80k in chips.
Raymond Davis takes brutal beat but perseveres
Raymond Davis had a solid 2012 WSOP, making two very deep runs in Omaha 8 or better tournaments, including one final table, but the most memorable moment of his 2012 WSOP will likely be a beat he suffered on Day 1c of the Main Event.
Davis found himself all-in on the flop in a monster pot, holding QQ on a Q-3-3 board. His opponent had trip 3’s, but the poker gods decided to intervene, and Davis’ opponent spiked his 1-outer on the River. Davis overcame the crushing defeat that would have given him a stack of about 100,000 chips and grinded his way back up to over 80,000.
Sorel Mizzi creates a new Twitter #hashtag
You can pick your friends but you can’t pick your tablemates at the WSOP, and Sorel Mizzi learned this yesterday when he was seated with a very drunk person. Mizzi decided to make the best of it, inventing the Twitter hashtag of #thingsdrunkpplsay and tweeting out the man’s wild rants.
Here are a few of the Tweets from Sorel Mizzi?@sorelmizzi:
If ya’ll has been drinking as much as I drunk every one be drunk drunk ?#thingsdrunkpplsay?
Belligerent drunk guy at my tbl just dbled up. At least half amazon room knows it… going to start tweeting ?#thingsdrunkpplsay?
Floor person just cut him off. “whoever said I been drinkin is gonna get a dose of non drinking now ima knock all u bitches out”
Terrence Chan concussed, but still plays Main Event
Apparently Terrence Chan suffered a concussion after an incidental head-butt while training or competing in MMA (forum reports were a bit vague on the exact nature of the injury and how it was sustained). The Concussion didn’t stop Chan from playing the WSOP Main Event despite still having symptoms, and Chan not only survived but thrived on Day 1c, building-up an above average chip-stack that he will take into Wednesday’s Day 2c.
