22 year-old Russian wins Omaha 8 Championship

One of the latest trends at the World Series of Poker over the past few years –In addition to the utter dominance by British poker players– has been the emergence of random, unknown, Russian poker players. While this is an interesting storyline, I’m also dismayed by this development as a writer since these players have names that take a very long time to spell correctly!

Last year it was Vladimir Shchemelev, who came out of nowhere and made final table after final table, and this year’s breakout Russian player thus far has been Vyacheslav Zhukov, who won the $10k Omaha 8 Championship yesterday –and true to form it’s unclear whether his name is spelled Viacheslav or Vyacheslav!

Zhukov, a 22 year-old, poker player is participating in his first WSOP, and obviously earned his biggest cash to date, a $465,216 payday. The only other entry on his resume was a win at the 2009 EPT tournament series in Kiev where he captured the $3,000 6-Max title (worth just over $100k).

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the $10k Omaha 8 Championship:

1. Vyacheslav Zhukov — $465,216

2. George Lind III — $287,554

3. Steve Billirakis — $214,697

4. Richard Ashby — 161,379

5. Mack Lee — $122,054

6. Guillaume Rivet — $92,908

7. Jason Steinberg — $71,148

8. Mikael Thuritz — $54,837

9. Josh Arieh — $42,514
