The changes continue to come at UB Poker, this time the popular online poker site is hoping for addition by subtraction, deciding to cancel their most popular and recognizable poker tournament the Aruba Poker Classic.

At the end of Day 2 the Bay 101 Shooting Stars tournament had just 27 players remaining, and leading the remaining pro-heavy field is none other than UB Poker pro Phil Hellmuth. Hellmuth is sitting on a 550k chip-stack, about 54k more than his nearest competitor, poker pro Hasan Habib.

The $10,000 buy-in tournament attracted a total of 333 participants, creating a first prize of $878,500.

2010 is shaping up to be a very interesting year in online poker; Tom “durrrr” Dwan is back to form; the Dang brothers, URInDanger and trex313, are both playing and as usual winning; Isildur1 is being, well, Isildur1; and Alexander “postflopaction” Kostritsyn is on fire.

Viewers of High Stakes Poker have grown accustomed to the outlandish prop bets that are made by poker’s elite, but this past episode may have eclipsed all of the others. During the episode, Phil Ivey and instant poker sensation, Tom Dwan hashed out a $1 million bet on whether Ivey could go “vegetarian” for a year.

Ivey tried goading Dwan into upping the bet to $2 million, but the bet held at $1 million. Later on in an interview with HSP host Kara Scott, Ivey let the cat out of the bag that he was already toying with the idea of becoming a vegetarian –and now he has $1 million extra reasons to do it! With news of a 6-figure robbery stealing the headlines, many of us in the poker world seem to have forgotten there was still a tournament to be played in Berlin Germany. The Berlin stop on the EPT which shattered the record for the largest tournament ever in Germany, and came close to eclipsing the EPT record set in San Remo, unfortunately fell by the wayside amidst the absolute lunacy of the robbery  that took place.

The National Heads-Up Championship tournament has become one of the most coveted titles in all of poker. The tournament utilizes an invitation only entry, bracket-style format, comprising poker’s elite players. The elite eight is set to return to the poker tables at Caesars Palace on Sunday, and headlining the remaining field will be the 76 year-old 10-time WSOP bracelet winner Doyle Brunson. Along the way Doyle has defeated Brock Parker, who won back-to-back bracelets at the 2009 WSOP; Actor, and poker enthusiast, Don Cheadle; and young superstar Annette Obrestad. In the round of eight Brunson will face off against Dennis Phillips, who has gone from a Cinderella story at the 2008 WSOP, to a polished poker professional and serious poker contender.

There have been conflicting reports regarding the daring heist that took place on Saturday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin. Anywhere from four to six masked gunmen are said to have stormed the hotel in search of the tournament’s prize-pool.

There has been no official word on the amount taken, but some reports have said the gunmen made off with a reported $800,000. Authorities stated that the robbers lost one of the bags of money they had taken, containing a sizeable portion of the haul, and then fled the scene. Read the rest of this entry…

In one of the biggest upsets of the first day of the National Heads-Up Poker Championship, 2003 World Series of Poker Champion, Chris Moneymaker, was able to dispatch Patrik Antonius in about 30 minutes. Antonius, who frequently plays heads-up cash games online, was a huge betting favorite in the match, but it was the man who put poker on the map in 2003 who will be advancing in the bracket style tournament.
