Cassidy dispatches Ivey and Nguyen for first bracelet
Joe Cassidy has been around the poker world for quite a while now, actually since 2002. Despite making waves in the poker world during the height of the Poker Boom Cassidy was still in search of his first major tournament victory when he sat down at the final table of the $5k Limit Omaha 8 or better tournament at the 2012 World Series of Poker. And it would take a monumental performance by Cassidy to earn that first tournament victory; having to dispatch a pair of the game’s all-time greats to earn his first WSOP bracelet.
But dispatch them Cassidy, as he sent Phil Ivey to the rail in 3rd place and came back the following day to battle Scotty Nguyen heads-up for the bracelet. Cassidy took a commanding 3.5-to-1 chip-lead into heads-up play against the 1998 WSOP Main Event Champion, and Scotty was unable to get anything going against Cassidy. In the end Cassidy would pick-up his first major tournament victory by denying Scotty Nguyen his 6th WSOP bracelet.
Cassidy now has over $1.8 million in career tournament earnings and after making three WSOP final tables, along with four WPT Top 7 finishes, Cassidy can now cross his name off the list of the best players who haven’t won a WSOP tournament, or in Cassidy’s case, any live tournament.
The nearly $300k payday was the largest for Cassidy since a runner-up finish at the 2004 United States Poker Championship in Atlantic City, and his first six-figure cash since 2009 when Joe just missed the televised final table of the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Poker Classic, finishing in 7th place.
For Ivey it was his third close call with a bracelet in 2012, and even though he is prime position to win the WSOP Player of the Year award, it’s obviously the bracelets that are driving him. So far Ivey has finished 7th in the $5k Seven-Card-Stud 8 or better tournament, a runner-up finish in the $10k Pot Limit Holdem tournament, and now a 3rd place showing in the $5k Omaha 8 or better tournament.
In addition to Cassidy, Ivey, and Scotty Nguyen, the final table of the tournament also included Mike Matusow, Ryan Lenaghan, and Meng La.
Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:
1. Joe Cassidy — $294,777
2. Scotty Nguyen — $182,213
3. Phil Ivey — $136,046
4. Meng La — $102,260
5. Greg Jamison — $77,342
6. Elie Doft — $58,873
7. Bart Hanson — $45,084
