Online poker traffic plummets 22% after Black Friday
Two weeks after the online poker world was rocked by the seizure of PokerStars’, Full Tilt Pokers’, and Absolute/UB Pokers’ domain names, as well as the indictments of several founders and owners of these sites the online poker industry is starting to get a glimpse of just how important the US market is to online poker.
Despite several poker rooms still serving US customers, the fallout from Black Friday has seen the online poker world lose 22% of its overall traffic according to the most recent report by the online poker tracking site www.pokerscout.com.
The good news is that the US market no longer makes up the overwhelming majority of the worldwide online poker market, and appears to be only about 1/3 of the total market share –taking into consideration the 22% loss along with the amount of traffic at the current crop of US-friendly online poker sites. So it appears that online poker will live on with or without the US market.
This is also good news when you consider there is another large segment of potential online poker players from the US who were already sitting on the sidelines, either fearing the legality of online poker, or simply unwilling to jump through the myriad of hoops necessary to deposit and withdraw from an online poker room. Should the US legalize online poker, it’s quite likely that the global market would see 50% of its traffic coming from the United States.
