WSOP To USE Big Blind Ante and Shot Clock For High Stake Events A

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has confirmed that they will be introducing two new elements to high-roller events at the 2018 WSOP and the news has received the approval from the majority of poker players.

The WSOP confirmed in a tweet last week that the 2018 WSOP will introduce the big blind ante and shot clock elements to three high-roller events: at the $100,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em which takes place from June 1 to 4, $50,000 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller which takes place on July 13 and 14, and The Big One for One Drop – $1,000,000 No-Limit Hold’em which takes place from July 15 to 17.

Shot Clock At 2018 WSOP

This is the first time WSOP is introducing these two new elements but poker players will be used to both of them as many tournaments started implementing the shot clock and big blind ante. The World Poker Tour (WPT), Partypoker LIVE, the ARIA and PokerStars have been playing with shot clock and big blind ante events for high roller segments in recent years.

888Poker even went as far as introducing the shot clock during the 888Live Main Event last year. It was well received by the poker community and many poker enthusiasts feel that introducing the shot clock to the circuit is the future of poker.

Shot clocks have been implemented in various tournaments to encourage players to speed up the game and make it more exciting. When a shot clock is in place, a player typically gets 30 seconds to make a decision during their turn. Usually, there are “time bank cards” that players can use to add an extra 30 or 60 seconds to their thinking time when faced with a particularly difficult hand.

When the shot clock runs out, the player has to make a decision to call, bet, raise, or fold—or the hand will be considered dead.

Big Blind Ante At High Stake Events

Big blind ante on the other hand, is another move to speed up the process of the game. In usual plays, every player pays out an ante. But arguments arise when the players start calling out which players at the table have and haven’t paid their share. When a big blind ante is put in place, a player who is currently at the big blind pays the ante for everyone on the table.

WSOP has yet to clarify if they are following the 30-second shot clock, which is industry norm at this point, or how the time bank cards would work—how many cards will be given to players and if the cards could be rolled over to the next event. Poker pro Daniel Negreanu was one of the first players to commend the move.

In a statement on Twitter, Negreanu said, “Bravo. Positive changes coming to poker events across the world. More hands, faster play, equals more fun to be had!”

The 49th Annual WSOP will take place at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from May 29-July 17. Apart from the addition of these two new features to high stake games, the tournament is also holding a record number of 78 bracelet events.
