10 Questions heading into the 2012 WSOP Part 2
As the 2012 World Series of poker approaches I thought it would be a good time to take a look at some of the questions poker players and the poker media will have going into the nearly two-month long summer poker series in Las Vegas. In this installment I’ll take a look at five questions dealing with specific poker players. In Part 1 I examined rules and the general state of poker.
1. How will the World Series of Poker handle 2000 Champion Chris Ferguson?
The WSOP famously covered over the picture of 1994 WSOP Champion Russ Hamilton after the Super-User scandal at Ultimate Bet Poker –Hamilton was also uninvited from the Tournament of Champions for all former Main Event winners at the 40th Anniversary WSOP—so how will the WSOP deal with 2000 Champion Chris Ferguson, who is currently under indictment by the DOJ and who owes poker players over $300 million through Full Tilt poker?
It will be interesting to see if the WSOP decides to treat Ferguson in the same way as Hamilton.
2. Will Annie Duke be in attendance?
Another player that may or may not be welcome at the WSOP (although she will not be disinvited like her brother or Ferguson) is Annie Duke. Duke of course was part of the failed experiment that was the Epic Poker league, and despite pocketing a few hundred thousand personally the league never even made it out of its first year, with the $1 million freeroll promised to the top 27 players scrapped at this point.
3. How will Viktor Blom perform at his first WSOP?
One player who will make his much anticipated WSOP debut is Viktor “Isildur1” Blom. Blom is of course the online dynamo that changed the high-stakes poker games at Full Tilt poker, with the youngster responsible for the 10 largest pots in online poker history.
Blom has slowed down a bit at the online poker tables, but he has already made a splash on the live tournament trail, winning the $100k Super-High-Roller at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in 2012.
4. How will Daniel Cates perform at his first WSOP?
Another player who will be playing in his first WSOP will be Daniel “Jungleman12” Cates. Cates is another online cash-game pro who brings quite a reputation to the poker tables. However, unlike Blom, Cates has yet to prove he has what it takes to be a successful live tournament pro, but nobody is going to count out the Jungleman.
5. Will Harrison Gimbel play a full schedule?
The final player who will be making his much anticipated WSOP debut is Harrison Gimbel. Gimbel won the PokerStars PCA at the age of 19, and is finally old enough to play in the WSOP. Gimbel has also won a few tournaments in his home-state of Florida where the minimum age to gamble is set at 18. Don’t be surprised if Harrison takes the WSOP by storm this year.
