1,088 entrants on Day 1a of the 2012 WSOP Main Event
A total of 1,066 hopeful poker players registered for the opening flight of the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event on Saturday, a substantial increase over the 897 players that registered on Day 1a of the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event in 2011.
Even though Day 1a of the World Series of Poker Main Event was larger than last year’s Day 1a there is a major asterisk that needs to be attached to the number since the 2012 WSOP Main Event will feature only three starting days compared to the four starting days held in 2011.
One player with dreams of a deep run, and possibly the 2012 World Series of Poker Player of the Year award was Phil Hellmuth, who arrived for his opening day of the 2012 WSOP Main Event fresh off of 14 hours of sleep and “ready to play” according to the Poker Brat himself. However, after an up and down day that saw Phil tilted, calm, tilted, calm, and tilted again, the 1989 WSOP Main Event hit the rail, ending his 2012 WSOP on a sour note. As is his MO, Hellmuth arrived late, during level 3, and by level had been sent packing, but not before becoming a Twitter celebrity when Jordan “Jymaster11” Young tweeted some of Hellmuth’s more memorable lines of the day.
On the opposite end of the spectrum was William Johns, a fairly unknown player who racked-up an impressive 266,700 chips on his way to the Day 1a chip lead. Johns stack was over 100,000 more than his nearest competitor, and an astounding 5.5-times the average stack heading into Day 2a.
Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts at the end of Day 1a of the WSOP Main Event:
1. William John – 266,700
2. Gerardo Lubas – 165,825
3. Daniel Strelitz – 164,125
4. Dane Lomas – 157,600
5. Cary Katz – 154,850
6. Benjamin Pollak – 144,200
7. Chance Kornuth – 141,775
8. Jonathan Cuevas – 141,675
9. .Jared Okun – 141,350
10. Eric Kurtzman – 136,900
In order to approach the over 6,800 total entrants from last year’s WSOP, Days 1b and 1c of the 2012 WSOP Main Event will have to average nearly 3,000 entrants; a tall feat to say the least, but with Day 1c attendance looking to be well over 3,000 (and possibly as high 4,000 players) it’s still a possibility that the 2012 WSOP can overtake the 2011 version as the third most attended in the history of the game. Of course, the paltry Day 1a attendance number could be a sign that the 2012 WSOP Main Event might end-up with under 6,000 entrants, which would be a major disappointment.
