20 players remain entering Day 3 of WPT Bay 101

Day 2 of the World Poker Tour (WPT) Bay 101 Shooting Stars Main Event saw the field shed 129 players of the 149 players that sat down on Wednesday for Day 2 of the tournament. The players were nearly able to get to the predetermined goal of just 18, as play was called to a halt after seven 90-minute levels with 20 players remaining.

During the latter stages of the day the money bubble burst when two shooting stars got their chips into the middle. Kathy Liebert was in good shape holding A/Q against Men Nguyen’s A/T but a Ten on the flop gave Men the lead (as well as a guaranteed cash in the tournament and Liebert’s $5,000 bounty) and eliminated Liebert in 37th place.

A number of big names followed Liebert out the door, including Fabrice Soulier (35th place), Poker Hall of Famer Linda Johnson (33rd place), Allen Cunningham (28th place), Jason Mercier (27th place), Tommy Vedes (26th place), Men Nguyen (23rd place), and Josh Arieh (22nd place).

The story (once again) is turning out to be 2010 WSOP Champion Jonathan Duhamel, who has once again positioned himself for a big score. After putting a disappointing 2011 in the rearview mirror (a year that ended with a violent home invasion just days before Christmas) Duhamel started 2012 with a number of big scores at the 2012 PokerStars PCA, followed by a runner-up finish in the $5,100 NLHE event at the LA Poker Classic. Duhamel is now looking to add to his already impressive tally of over $1.3 million in tournament winnings for 2012, as well as extend his Player of the Year leads.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts heading into Day 3 of the Bay 101 Shooting Stars Main Event:

1. Scott Baumstein – 1,301,000

2. Andrew Badecker – 1,106,000

3. Moon Kim – 1,016,000

4. Joe Elpayaa – 861,000

5. Erik Cajelais – 807,000

6. Jonathan Duhamel – 751,000

7. Taylor von Kriegenbergh – 737,000

8. Joe Serock – 647,000

9. Mike McClain – 537,000

10. Danny Le – 443,000

Along with Duhamel (currently in 6th place on the leader-board) only one other bounty remains, JC Tran who will take one of the shortest stacks into Day 3. Tran and Taylor Von Kriegenbergh are the only two former WPT Champions remaining in the field.

On Thursday the 20 remaining players will retake the Bay 101 poker tables, playing down to the televised final table of just 6 players, all in search of the near $1 million first-place prize. The remaining players will begin Thursday in Level 19 of the tournament, with blinds of 4,000/8,000 with a 1,000 chip ante. Day 3 will begin at Noon local time.
