On Tuesday the survivors from Day 1a and Day 1b of the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event returned to the Rio for their respective Day 2 flights and when the dust settled a total of 842 of the 2,044 Day 2a and Day 2b competitors had moved on to Day 3.

Yesterday the survivors from Day 1c were back at the Rio, and of the 2,300 players who returned for Day 2c, 911 moved on to join the Day 1a and Day 1b survivors for Day on Thursday. So Thursday will see 1,753 players fighting for one of the 666 spots that will make the money either late in Day 3 or early on Day 4 of the tournament.

A number of big names failed to make it through to Day 3, including Doyle Brunson who had built-up a sizable stack on Day 1, but couldn’t keep the momentum going on Day 2. Other names that hit the rail on Wednesday were Viktor Blom, Mike Mizrachi, Gus Hansen, and Phil Ivey.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a number of players were able to build mountainous stacks of chips on Day 2c, including chip-leader Michael Hack, who will bring 457,000 into Day 3. Day 1a/1b chip-leader Gaelle Baumann will take the overall chip-lead into Day 3, the only player above 500k chips.

Day 3 of the 2012 WSOP Main Event will get underway at Noon local time on Thursday, and the action should be fast and furious right out of the gate.

Sick Beat of the Day

This is probably not the worst beat of the day, but it’s definitely one of the most talked about. Doyle Brunson’s 2012 WSOP Main Event came to an abrupt end when he flopped three of a kind, turned a full house and got all his chips in the middle only to see his opponent’s top pair turn into a bigger full house. Brunson was crippled by the hand and eliminated shortly after.
