Annie Duke speaks at online poker hearing

At yesterday’s congressional hearing regarding the fate of online gambling the exchanges were often heated, the arguments lacked factual accuracy, and the analogies were over the top: So, all in all it was just a typical day for Congress! Among the witnesses testifying were Annie Duke, the Ultimate Bet sponsored poker pro who spoke on behalf of the Poker Players Alliance; Lynn Malerba who represented the Mohegan Tribe; Ed Williams for the Credit Union National Association; Tom Malkasian representing the Commerce Casino; and law enforcement specialist Michael Fagan.

A shining light for poker enthusiasts yesterday was UB Poker pro Annie Duke, who did an excellent job of explaining her position in a clear manner –although she had her own over the top moment when she compared the current climate in the United States to China and Iran. For the most part Duke’s comments followed the talking points Congress has heard in the past, with talk of regulation, UIGEA legislation being ineffective, and the stifling of personal freedoms.

Apparently the hearing actually did some good, as a couple of Congressmen changed their positions form being against the bill, to reevaluating it, with Congressman John Campbell (R-CA) going so far as to propose an amendment that would set a stop-loss limit on a player. How the measure would be implemented is unclear –as is the effectiveness since there are hundreds of online poker sites to choose from.
