Another win for Denmark Christensen wins WPT Vienna
Danish poker pro Morten Christensen picked-up his first major tournament victory this weekend by winning the World Poker Tour (WPT) Vienna Main Event. Christensen came out on top of the 396 player field, pocketing an impressive $410,519 as well as reserving a seat in the $25k WPT Championship that will take place next month at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Christensen’s win marks the fourth major tournament victory for Danish poker players this year, as three Danes have won the last three European Poker Tour (EPT) events:
* Mickey “Mement_Mori” Petersen won the PokerStars EPT Copenhagen in February
* Frederick Jensen won the PokerStars EPT Madrid Main Event in March
* Jannick Wrang won the PokerStars EPT Campione in April
Christensen began the day in second-place, but like the rest of the field was chasing the chip-leader, Ognjen Sekularac. But from the outset Christensen was off and running, quickly taking over the chip-lead and continuing to extended his lead throughout, nearly running away with the win.
His eventual heads-up opponent Konstantin Tolokno began the day with one of the shortest stacks at the final table, but managed to pick his spots and eventually built his chip-stack up to the point where he could make a serious run at the WPT Vienna title. By the time the two locked horns to play for the title Christensen had a commanding chip-lead and used the extra chips to apply relentless pressure on Tolokno, who didn’t seem to have an answer for the Dane’s aggression.
The third-place finisher, Ben “NeverScaredB” Wilinofsky was looking to pick-up his second leg of Poker’s Triple Crown (Wilinofsky has an EPT victory on his resume) started the day in third-place and was never really able to get anything going, eventually falling to Christensen, and winding up in third place.
Here is a look at the final table payouts from the WPT Vienna Main Event:
1. Morten Christensen, $410,519
2. Konstantin Tolokno, $251,166
3. Ben Wilinofsky, $161,003
4. Ognjen Sekularac, $111,095
5. Goswin Siemsen, $82,106
6. Norbert Szecsi, $64,318
While the WPT heads back to the US, many of the players will now make the short trip from Vienna, Austria to Berlin, Germany for the penultimate stop on the European Poker Tour Season 8 schedule, the EPT Berlin. Third-place finisher Ben in the WPT Vienna Main Event, Ben Wilinofsky is the reigning EPT Berlin Champion, and will likely be on hand to defend his title.
The World Poker Tour will head to Florida for two stops before moving on the WPT Championship in May. First up on the WPT docket is the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown, followed by the WPT heading to Jacksonville for the inaugural WPT Jacksonville BestBet Open.
