Anthony Ruberto captures WPT Jacksonville title
If you were given the choice of any WPT tournament held in the US to win, the World Poker Tour stop in Jacksonville would be pretty low in the list. This isn’t because the WPT Jacksonville has a paltry prize-pool (first-place clocked in at $325k) or that the tournament is thought inferior because the top players are in Europe where they can play online poker real money. No the real reason the WPT Jacksonville would be low on the list is simply because it is the first Main Event tournament held in the US that the WPT will not air on TV.
Despite this dubious distinction a larger than expected field turned up in the Sunshine State for the $3,500 tournament (which featured a multi-entry format) including some of the biggest names in poker like Jason Mercier, Shaun Deeb, John Racener, Will Failla, and Dwyte Pilgrim.
The final six players reconvened at noon for to see which player would walk away with the first-place prize-money and a seat into the $25k WPT Championship. Heading into the final table Massachusetts native Anthony Ruberto held a commanding chip-lead, while the biggest name left in the field, Darryll Fish entered the day as the short-stack. Here is a look at the official chip-counts for the players at the start of the final table:
1. Anthony Ruberto – 4,500,000
2. Vitor Coelho – 2,570,000
3. Lisa Hamilton – 1,901,000
4. Sam Soverel – 1,432,000
5. Artie Rodriguez – 797,000
6. Darryll Fish – 641,000
Remarkably, the tournament played out almost to form, as Fish was the first player eliminated, followed by Rodriguez. At this point Vitor Coelho was eliminated, as he and Sam Soverel were the two players who would flip-flop spots, with everyone finishing in the same position they started the day. Ruberto nearly held the chip-lead throughout the entire final table, and managed to stay out of trouble for the entire final table, a truly dominating performance.
Another storyline that developed was 2009 WSOP Ladies Champion Lisa Hamilton’s attempt at becoming the first ever woman to capture an open-championship in the tour’s 10 years history, unfortunately for Hamilton her run would end with a 3rd place finish, her 3rd career six-figure cash.
Here is a look at the complete final table payouts from the 2011 WPT Jacksonville Main Event (at this point I usually tell you that you can catch the highlights on the WPT telecast, but as I stated earlier, for the first time this is not the case):
1. Anthony Ruberto – $325,928
2. Sam Soverel – $187,762
3. Lisa Hamilton – $112,657
4. Vitor Coelho – $75,105
5. Artie Rodriguez – $55,077
6. Darryll Fish – $46,315
