Attendance trend continues at WPT Grand Prix de Paris

It’s becoming abundantly clear that outside of a few specific events around the world Main Event tournaments simply cannot last with buy-ins of over $5,000. Case in point is the €7,500 buy-in WPT Grand Prix de Paris. Last year 312 players took part in the €7,500 buy-in WPT Grand Prix de Paris Main Event; a huge increase from 2010 when 247 players turned up for the return of the WPT to Paris after a multiple year hiatus. But the numbers don’t tell the whole story as the Season IX stop featured a €10,000 buy-in. This year the tournament only managed to attract 228 players despite allowing re-entries on Day 1b.

This downward spiral in attendance has been seen at a number of tournaments across the globe, as players in a post-Black Friday poker economy are becoming far pickier when it comes to which tournaments are worth the $10,000 buy-ins. While events like the PCA and Aussie Millions are still attracting huge fields, tournaments like the WPT Paris are having a hard time competing with the numerous other tournaments ranging from EPT events to WPT National Series tournaments.

The WPT Grand Prix de Paris is probably suffering from being wedged in between the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event and the upcoming WSOP Europe tournament series.

Still, even with a lackluster final tally, the tournament did attract a number of big names from the poker world, including Tony G, Daniel Cates, Dan Smith, and Vanessa Selbst.

By the end of Day 1b a mere 143 players were still standing, ready to reconvene at the Aviation Club for Day 2 of the event on Wednesday. Here is a look at the chip-leaders from the two starting flights of the WPT Grand Prix de Paris Main Event.
