Daily Grind: Commerce Fight, WPT Borgata and more
Every day the poker world is inundated with more news, reports, and gossip, than any of us can read. At PokerNewsBoy.com we understand that there are only so many hours in the day, and only so much time you can set aside to follow all of the stories taking place, so we have come up with the Daily Grind as a solution. The Daily Grind will make sure you don’t miss any of the more obscure poker stories, wrapping up the day in poker in one neat, concise, column.
Today I’ll take a look at a number of stories including the attendance numbers at the WPT Borgata Winter Open, a fight at the Commerce Casino, and the DOJ’s latest statement, which tallies all of one-word.
Over 1,000 entrants for the WPT Borgata Winter Open
The Borgata in Atlantic City has become one of the hottest tournament destinations in poker, with WPT tournaments regularly pulling in four-figure fields, and the WPT Borgata Winter Open was no exception, as 1,042 registered for the tournament. The total prize-pool for the Winter Open Main Event exceeded $3.5 million, with $730k set aside for the winner.
At the time of writing there are only 100 players still in the hunt for the title, including Joe Serock, Taylor Paur, Keven Stammen, Matt Salsberg, Jonathan Roy, Ana Marquez, Andrew Badecker, Matt Matros, Allen Kessler, Matt Glantz, Jonathan Little, Cherish Andrews, and Jamie Kerstetter.
Shawn Sheikan and David “Viffer” Peat fight at the Commerce
In one of the wilder and stranger stories in recent memory, poker pros Shawn Sheikan and David “Viffer” Peat apparently came to blows at the Commerce Casino with Sheikan getting the better of the exchange, allegedly punching and kicking Viffer while he was on the ground –always the sign of a badass, only trumped by having multiple people kick a single person on the ground.
The forums have the rumors and gossip on the story if you want to do a little Google search, it’s a bit tawdry, juvenile, and somewhat sad all at the same time when you consider these are grown men, but the Cliff’s version is that the two were fighting over girls.
DOJ says announcement coming “Soon”
When the deal between PokerStars and the DOJ went through last summer US poker players were under the assumption that it would only be a matter of time before they had access to the money frozen in their Full Tilt Poker accounts. Unfortunately, there has been little movement by the DOJ to repay US players, and it seems that the notion that this would be a quick and easy process is now debunked.
On Wednesday, Cardplayer Magazine contacted the DOJ to ask about the potential timeline, and was given the one-word answer that an announcement would be made “Soon.” Well, if that doesn’t put your mind at ease I don’t what will.
