Daniel Negreanu among final 8 at WPT Championship

Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las VegasTeam PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu is having quite a 2013 tournament campaign. “Kid Poker”, who is now 37 years-old, has already won the World Series of Poker APAC Main Event and finished 4th in the European Poker Tour Grand Final, now Negreanu finds himself at the unofficial World Poker Tour $25k Championship final table, along with other big names like Chino Rheem and Erick Lindgren.

That’s the good news; the bad news for Negreanu is he is sitting in last place with just 545,000 chips, heading into Wednesday’s action. When play resumes at Noon local time on Wednesday the players will be in Level 21, with the blinds at 15,000-30,000 and a 5,000-chip ante. With less than 20 Big Blinds, and with the chip-leader at nearly 5 million, Negreanu will likely be desperate from the get-go, but a single double-up could drastically change his fortunes.

Leading the way is Chino Rheem. The polarizing poker pro is no stranger to big wins, and is very good at applying pressure when he builds a big stack; which is precisely what he did on Day 4 of the tournament, considering Chino will be taking about a third of the total chips in play into battle on Wednesday.

Here is a look at the chip counts for the final eight players in the 2013 WPT Championship:

1. Chino Rheem – 4,839,000

2. Erick Lindgren – 2,518,000

3. Jonathan Roy – 1,987,000

4. Matt Hyman – 1,940,000

5. Brandon Steven – 1,235,000

6. David Peters – 858,000

7. Rocco Palumbo – 680,000

8. Daniel Negreanu – 545,000

Another storyline I’ve been following throughout the WPT Championship is the number of former WPT Champions still in the mix. Among the final eight players in the tournament, five are former WPT Champion: Rheem, Lindgren, Jonathan Roy, Rocco Palumbo, and Negreanu.

It could very well be an extremely short day on Wednesday as the final eight players are scheduled to play down to the official final table of six players before calling it a night. However, there will still be big-time poker played at the Bellagio as the $100k Super-High-Roller will also be in action. On Day 1 of the tournament 15 players entered the event, with Steve “ZugWatt” Silverman landing atop the leader-board; continuing his excellent 2013 campaign.

Here is a look at the 11 survivors from Day 1 (Registration is still open for the tournament):

Table 1:

Seat 1: Steven Silvermen – 962,500

Seat 3: Jean-Noel Thorel – 225,000

Seat 5: Andrew Robl – 204,500

Seat 7: Robert Mercer – 308,000

Seat 9: Yevgeniy Timoshenko – 935,000

Seat 5: Jason Mercier – 333,500

Seat 6: David Sands – 612,000
