On Thursday Daniel Negreanu won his 6th World Series of Poker bracelet, and locked-up the 2013 World Series of Poker Player of the Year award, with a win in the €25k High-roller tournament at the WSOP Europe tournament series.

It all started with a deep, but not deep enough to overtake Matt Ashton in the WSOP Player of the year race, run in the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, where he finished in 25th place. With his Main Event run over it looked like Daniel Negreanu’s run at a historic second WSOP POY trophy was going to come up a little short, but as every poker player likes to say, “There’s always another tournament,” and for Negreanu that tournament was the €25k High-Roller tournament, the final WSOP event of 2013 that will award Player of the Year points.

Negreanu’s 2013 WSOP adventure started off with a bang, as he came out on top of the inaugural WSOP APAC Main Event in Australia, ending a bracelet drought that dated back five years to 2008. Negreanu’s summer in Las Vegas featured six WSOP cashes including a runner-up finish in the 2-7 Lowball tournament, but he still trailed Matt Ashton in the Player of the Year race, until his last minute WSOPE victory on Thursday.

The WSOPE €25k High-Roller didn’t have a huge field –just 80 total entries—but the tournament wasn’t a cakewalk either, as the field was almost exclusively made up of the top poker players in the game. Negreanu only needed to finish in 8th place in the tournament to win the POY award; he just went ahead and won the bracelet and the €750k first-place prize for good measure.

Looking back at his 2013 WSOP success, it could be the point at which Negreanu went from being one of the best tournament players of his era, to one of the best all-time, as his resume has been padded with two WSOP bracelets and a couple million dollars in prize-money this year.
