David ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott & Phil Ivey Inducted In

Every year the Poker Hall of Fame (PHoF) inducts just two members who have been selected by an elite panel from a great pool of nominees. This year, the late David ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott & Phil Ivey have been nominated in the 2017 PHoF. Some of the other nominees who missed out include Matt Savage, Huck Seed, Ted Forrest, Max Pescatori, Thor Hansen, David Chiu and Mike Matusow.

David ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott

There were many in the poker community who expected ‘Devilfish’ to be nominated in the PHoF last year and were disappointed to see him get left out. This year the elite pool of judges included 18 media members and 27 living PHoF members. ‘Devilfish’ passed away in 2015 but his legacy continues to live on as he did a lot to spread the game of poker in the United Kingdom and also was a mentor to a number of young poker players. ‘Devilfish’ won a WPT title and WSOP gold bracelet along with a total of $6.2 million in career prize money.

The Ulliott family extended a note of thanks to the PHoF, media and poker fans for getting Devilfish into the PHoF.

Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey will go down not only as a PHoF but also one of the great poker players in the history of the game along with Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth who are already in the PHoF. Ivey has won 10 World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelets and has more than $24 million in live poker career prize money. He has also won a WPT Title and a high stakes event at the 2012 Aussie Millions. Ivey could only be inducted into the PHoF in 2017 as he only became eligible this year for nomination after turning 40.

Ivey hasn’t really done well at the WSOP or other popular live poker tournaments in the last few years. Instead, Ivey has had to battle lawsuits in New Jersey and London, England over allegations of cheating the casinos by using a technique known as card counting. Ivey won $9.6 million along with his playing partner at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City and another $12.5 million at London’s Crocford Casino.

The poker pro has maintained that card counting is a top skill that only few can master and has continued to fight to clear his name. Ivey stated that he was honored to be inducted into the PHoF and said that he is still passionate about playing poker today as he was when he first started his journey.
