With Kevin Vandersmissen nipping on his heels for the #1 spot on the all-timed Belgian money-list, David Kitai gave himself some breathing room on Saturday after defeating a very tough final table at the EPT Berlin Main Event. Kitai became the first Belgian winner on the EPT tour, and can now claim to be an “unofficial” Triple Crown winner in poker.

Kitai can now officially be called the father of Belgian Poker considering he is the country’s first WSOP bracelet winner, the first WPT Champion form Belgium, and now the first EPT Champion from the small nation.

The final battle of the tournament came down to a confrontation between Kitai and rising tournament star Andrew Chen, who was in search of his first tournament win, despite having over $2 million in career tournament earnings. The two players cut a deal during heads-up play, but still left some money and of course the EPT title to play for. After a thrilling heads-up duel, Kitai emerged victorious, pocketing €712,000 to Chen’s €613,000, but more importantly, giving the Belgian an EPT title to go along with his WSOP bracelet.

Kitai has also won a WPT tournament, but since the tournament was an invitational event it doesn’t count as an official WPT title, which is why I called Kitai an “unofficial” Triple Crown winner. Kitai won the WPT Celebrity Invitational in 2011, and won a WSOP bracelet in 2008 in the $2,000 Pot Limit Holdem tournament.

Here is a look at how each of the final table participants during Saturday’s action:

1. Davidi Kitai — €712,000

2. Andrew Chen — €613,000

3. Andre Morath — €290,000

4. Mario Puccini — €220,000

5. Bahadir Kilickeser — €172,000

6. Cesar Garcia — €133,000

7. Marc Wright — €97,000

8. Pratyush Buddiga — €72,000

Meanwhile, not far from the EPT Berlin Main Event final table another final table was taking place for the High-Roller event. And if you ever wanted to see a stacked final table this was definitely it! The eight handed final table included some of the absolute biggest names in poker including a pair of Swedish stars in Viktor Blom and Martin Jacobson, a pair of German stars in Marvin Rettenmaier and Tobias Renkenmeier, as well as Chris Moorman, David Peters, and Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier: The only unknown quantity at the final table was Ukrainian Oleh Okhotskyi.

We’ll be sure to update you on how this stacked final table played out in the coming days.

The EPT is now gearing up for the Grand Final in Monte Carlo which will take place from April 25, 2012 through May 1, 2012, along with a full schedule of side events and invitational tournaments taking place around the €10,000 Main Event.
