Denmark victorious in third straight EPT event

It started in February with Mickey “Mement_Mori” Petersen winning at the PokerStars EPT Copenhagen, followed by Frederick Jensen capturing the EPT Madrid Main Event in March, and now, during the early morning hours of April 1 a third Danish poker player has won in as many events on the PokerStars EPT tour as Jannick Wrang defeated a tough final table to win the EPT Campione Main Event.

Wrang not only dealt with a very tough final table, but found himself pitted against two of the best poker players in the world as the tournament got down to three-handed action. Squaring-off against Wrang were Frenchman Fabrice Soulier and online legend turned live poker star Olivier Busquet.

All of the final table participants came into the day with roughly 50 big blinds to work with at a minimum, so from the outset it didn’t seem like this was going to be one of those rapid-fire elimination final tables –and sure enough it was the tortoise and not the hare that won out on the day.

After a gruelingly long final table that took some 14-hours to complete, Wrang was finally able to finish off Olivier Busquet after the two seemed to exchange pots for the bulk of their 90-minute showdown. In fact, the tournament almost had to be called to a halt as the casino was scheduled to close at 5 AM local time, and the two played past the 4 o’clock hour! However, in the end the tourney ended on schedule as Wrang eliminated Busquet at about 4:15 AM to capture his first EPT title, and give the Danes something to cheer about for the third straight time.

Busquet and Soulier are still in search of their first EPT win, but the two can take some solace in the fact they pockets $320,000 and $574,000 respectively.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:

1. Jannick Wrang – £640,000 ($854,000)

2. Olivier Busquet – £430,000 ($574,000)

3. Fabrice Soulier – £240,000 ($320,000)

4. Balazs Botond – £157,000 ($210,000)

5. Koen De Visscher – £124,000 ($165,000)

6. Mario Nagel – £92,000 ($123,000)

7. Stefano Puccilli – £71,500 ($95,400)

8. Robin Ylitalo – £54,000 ($72,000)

Next up on the PokerStars EPT schedule is the EPT Berlin, one of the most popular and prestigious (not to mention infamous) events on the tour. The EPT Berlin will take place from April 16th through the 21st followed by the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo from April 25th through May 1st. You may recall that it was just two years ago that a brazen daytime robbery at the EPT Berlin tournament made international headlines. The tournament was the first EPT event held in Berlin, and the robbery led to the tournament being moved the following year from a hotel to a casino –all went off without a hitch in 2011.
