EPT Barcelona and WPT Legends of Poker go head to head
We’re now in the middle of August and with the 2012 World Series of Poker now firmly behind us the other tours are getting rolling, and this week and the next we have two of the biggest tournaments of the year virtually going to head-to-head in the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona Main Event taking place from August 19th through the 25th, while the Party Poker owned World Poker Tour (WPT) is hosting the Legends of Poker tournament series in Los Angeles, with the Main Event scheduled for August 24th through the 29th.
The Legends of Poker will feature a $2,500 buy-in and will have two starting days, with Day 1a participants able to reenter on Day 1b if they so desire. The Legends of Poker tournament dates back to the founding of the WPT and was the second tournament played on the World Poker Tour back in late August of 2002.
In addition to the upcoming Main Event the WPT Legends of Poker tournament series (which began back in July) will be hosting a two-day $1,000 buy-in NLHE event with reentries on the 21st and 22nd of August. The tournament has a $150,000 guarantee which should get blown out of the water considering the structure of the event and the reentry format. And of course satellite tournaments will be running from now until the start of Day 1b of the Legends of Poker Main Event.
Last year the Legends of Poker Main Event was won by Will Failla, who bested the 757 player field to take home the top prize of $758,058.
The EPT Barcelona has been one of the best-attended EPT tournaments in the tour’s history, producing some huge prize-pools over the years. This time around the EPT Barcelona will once again feature a €5,000 entry-fee. Last year 811 players registered for the tournament, won by German poker player Martin Schleich, who pocketed €850,000 for his victory over a final table that included four Spaniards and poker superstar Eugene Katchalov.
The EPT Barcelona tournament series will also feature a €10,000 buy-in Heads-Up Championship that will be capped at 64 entries (which kicks-off on August 22nd), as well as a €10,000 No Limit Holdem High-Roller tournament, which will take place on August 23rd and finish on August 24th.
The WPT is entering its 11th Season while the EPT is heading into its 9th Season. The two tours are in direct competition with one another especially in the European market where the World Poker Tour has been making major inroads, even launching their National Series tour which is like WPT-lite events across Europe.
