Gaelle Baumann bubbles WSOP Main Event final table

With the turn of a card on Monday night the final table of the 2012 World Series of poker Main Event was decided, and it would be Frenchwoman Gaelle Baumann who would feel the sting of being the 2012 WSOP final table bubble-victim. Baumann was the last women left in the Main Event (besting Elisabeth Hill by a single spot; Hille finished in 11th place) and would have been the second woman to make the WSOP Main Event final table in the 43-year history of the tournament.

Baumann, who doubled-up a few hands before being eliminated, found herself all-in holding A/9 against the A/J of 2010 LA Poker Classic Champion Andras Koroknai. The board didn’t improve either player and Baumann was eliminated in 10th place, matching Annie Duke’s run in the 2000 WSOP, and falling short of Barbara Enright’s 5th place finish in 1995.

Elisabeth Hille’s WSOP run ended in 11th place when her A/Q failed to improve against the Pocket 7’s of Andras Koroknai (who has the dubious distinction of eliminating both women). The elimination of Hille and Baumann destroys one of the few remaining storylines in the Main Event (notice the lack of big names) but as we’ve seen in the past the WSOP Main Event has a way of crowning new stars in the poker world.

Interestingly, Baumann and Koroknai were involved in a very controversial hand on Day 6 that many feel should have seen the Hungarian eliminated by Baumann –and in something out of a Hollywood script it was Koroknai who would later eliminate Baumann.

The hand in question saw Baumann raise and Koroknai move all-in. but after the Blinds mucked Koroknai also mucked his hand not realizing Baumann was still involved. By rule the WSOP tournament director Jack Effel decided that Koroknai would only forfeit 60,000 chips since he mucked before Baumann called his all-in. Many players feel Koroknai should have been eliminated from the tournament, forfeiting his entire stack. As it stands, Koroknai is now one of the favorites to win the 2012 WSOP Main Event.

Koroknai is the only international player remaining in the tournament, as he’ll be squaring off against US residents, a huge difference from the past few years’ final table makeup. Here is a look at the nine players who will return to the Rio in October to play for the WSOP Main Event Championship:

* Seat 1: Russell Thomas – 24,800,000

* Seat 2: Jacob Balsiger – 13,115,000

* Seat 3: Jeremy Ausmus – 9,805,000

* Seat 4: Steven Gee – 16,860,000

* Seat 6: Jesse Sylvia – 43,875,000
