GUKPT Goliath shatters tournament poker record

Event organizers for the GUKPT Goliath tournament –a £100 buy-in NLHE tournament with three starting days, and a multi-entry format—were hoping to surpass the record set at the 2009 Boyle Poker IPO where 1,440 players registered for the event, making it the largest tournament in European and UK poker history. Well, the organizers achieved their goal as an impressive 1,765 runners registered over the three starting days, easily surpassing the previous record.

The tournament was held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, England, and along with the multi-entry format, the three Day 1 starting flights, and the affordable £100 buy-in, the tournament had another Ace up its sleeve when it came to attracting players: A full £5 from each registration would go to the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity –which netted the organization a total of £8,825!

Overall, the tournament prize-pool reached £176,500, with an impressive £32,653 set to go the winner of the event –not bad for a £100 buy-in tournament!

It’s unclear how the Boyle Poker IPO and the GUKPT Goliath will be entered into the record-books considering the drastically different formats – players eliminated on Day 1a of the GUKPT Goliath could then take part in Day 1b, and if they were eliminated again could register for a third time on Day 1c!

Either way, both tournaments should be proud of their achievements, and regardless of who goes down as the official record-holder, you can be certain that year-after-year other tournaments will take their shot at this record.
