If 2010 started off as the Year of the Woman, than 2011 is shaping up to be the Year of the Home-Grown Champion, considering the Aussie Millions Main Event was won by an Australian; the PokerStars EPT Deauville Main Event was captured by a Frenchman; and now the WPT Venice Main Event has been won by an Italian!

Italian poker pro Alessio Isaia was able to best a strong field of 523 players including a final table that included 2010 EPT London Champion David Vamplew and Team PokerStars Russia Pro Max Lykov, on his way to the €380,000 payday.

After a fast start to the day, with a number of quick exits, the players settled in, and when all was said and done the final table was a war of attrition with heads-up play lasting some eight hours!

After his victory a very elated Isaia told the PartyPoker Blog, “I am very happy because it is really a nice thing for me. I have tried for three-four years now to win a big tournament, and now I’ve done it,”

Here is a look at how the final eight players fared in the WPT Venice Championship:

1.    Alessio Isaia — €380,000
2.    Szabolcs Mayer — €228,990
3.    David Vamplew — €149,910
4.    Emmanuel Rodrigues — €101,960
5.    Adrien Camille Garrigues — €73,180
6.    Luca Fiorini — €57,830
7.    Max Lykov — €43,370
8.    Renato Paolini — €31,960

So after so much money going to a Italian, expect to see online poker real money players searching him out for a easy score.
