Jason Mercier victorious at WPT Super-High-Roller
While the 2011 World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Poker Classic was playing down to the final table (and what a final table it will be) another tournament with a massive prize-pool was taking place, but unlike the WPT Championship which drew 411 players this tournament was contested by only 23 players.
The second $100k Super-High-Roller tournament hosted by the WPT saw a total of 25 entrants (two players were allowed to “re-enter” the event, Rick Salomon and Roger Sippl) down slightly from the 29 players who entered the $100k tournament at the WPT Championship earlier this year. The tournament paid out five places, but in the end the final three players cut a deal that would see 80% of the prize-pool split based on their chip-counts.
The 5th place finisher was Roger Sippl, who as noted above anted-up $200k total for the event, so even with a $192,960 payout Sippl is still in the red over $7,000!
4th place would go to Justin “Boosted J” Smith, as the young superstar made nearly $200k in profit (a nice little score just before the holidays). The elimination of Smith left Haxton, Mercier, and the chip-leader Sands, who after a lengthy back-and-forth settled on a deal that saw most of the prize-pool split between the three, leaving nearly 20% and the $25k seat to the WPT Championship for the winner.
In the end it was Mercier who would walk away with the extra cash for the win, besting Sands in a heads-up duel. Mercier’s haul put the Team PokerStars Pro over the $7 million mark in career tournament earnings.
Here is a look at the complete payouts from the Super-High-Roller tournament:
1. Jason Mercier – $683,767 + $25,500 WPT Championship seat*
2. David Sands – $619,000*
3. Isaac Haxton – $582,000*
4. Justin Smith – $289,440
5. Roger Sippl – $192,960
