Mohamed Ali is the Greatest at the WPT Marrakech

The World Poker Tour crowned its latest winner this past weekend, and despite a final table that boasted some of poker’s biggest names it was a local player, with an all-too familiar name who would take home the WPT Marrakech title.

Oddly enough, one of the poker superstars defeated was the man who became famous for shadow-boxing his way to the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Championship, Jonathan Duhamel, fittingly taken out by a man named Mohamed Ali (Houssam) at the WPT Marrakech Main Event. Duhamel wasn’t the only big name unable to beat the 2011 Moroccan Poker Open Champion (and now WPT Marrakech Champion), as Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and Arnaud Mattern also fell by the wayside as Mohamed Ali Houssam captured his second tournament victory of 2011.

The nine-person final table was headlined by the trio of Team PokerStars Pros Duhamel, Mattern, and ElkY, but two of the three were dispatched early on as ElkY hit the rail in 8th place, followed by Duhamel in 7th – Mattern managed to hang on a bit longer before being eliminated in 4th place.

With the three big names eliminated, Houssam became the odds on favorite after dominating the tournament since the outset (almost always amongst the chip-leaders) in addition to having a bit of a home-field advantage considering his previous win back in May was at the same casino in Marrakech.

Here is how the final nine players fared at the final table of the WPT Marrakech Main Event:

1. Mohamed Ali Houssam — $267,011

2. Toufik Ourini — $166,374

3. Maksim Martinov — $107,340

4. Arnaud Mattern — $69,778

5. Hassan Fares — $50,991

6. Rodney Assous — $41,322

7. Jonathan Duhamel — $33,815

8. Elky Grospellier — $30,699

9. Sebastien Ta — $28,013
