Money bubble looms on Day 4 of WSOP Main Event
A long day of poker on Thursday saw the remaining field essentially cut in half, with an ominous 666 players moving on to Friday’s Day 4 of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event. Unfortunately for a dozen players Day 4 will end in sheer disappointment, not only because their WSOP dreams have come to an end, but also because only 654 players will make the money this year –meaning that after nearly a week they will still go home empty-handed.
Further evidencing that poker is becoming more and more a game of skill, the leader-board is loaded with top-flight talent, and unlike other years it’s not simply a hodgepodge of unknown names going on an early heater that sit atop the chip-counts.
Here is a look at some of players to keep your eye on during Day 4 of the WSOP Main Event (chip counts in parenthesis):
Vladimir Geshkenbein (900,000)
Geshkenbein is a big-stack master, and he has precisely that heading into Day 4. The young Russian who goes by the name of Beyne online is already a fairly accomplished live tournament player with an EPT and APPT High-Roller win on his resume. This is also his second run in the WSOP Main Event, having finished in 106th place in 2011.
Doyle Brunson (626,000)
Probably the biggest story of the 2013 Main Event up to this point is Doyle’s dominance, with the poker legend sitting on a very healthy chip-stack heading into Day 4. While most people consider the WSOP Main Event the territory of the young guns, but if anyone can buck that trend it’s Doyle.
Annette Obrestad (564,000)
The 2007 WSOPE Main Event champ has had very limited success in the US, but with a healthy chip-stack (and a little bit of luck) she could join Phil Hellmuth as the only players to win the WSOP and WSOPE Main Events.
Melanie Weisner (536,000)
There are a lot of women still alive in the field, and Weisner is probably one of the more talented tournament players among them. Melanie has been quiet throughout the 2013 WSOP thus far, but a deep Main Event run could end that.
Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (455,000)
One of two Triple Crown winners still in the hunt, ElkY is in good position for a deep run, and with the money bubble looming the aggressive pro will likely try to increase his chip-count early on during Day 4.
Leo Margets (430,000)
Margets is another player with a good history in WSOP Main Events having been the last woman standing back in 2009. In my opinion Leo doesn’t quite get the credit she deserves for poker skills, so keep an eye on her today.
10 other players to watch on Day 4:
1. Marvin Rettenmaier (394,000)
2. Greg Merson (390,500)
3. Mike Mizrachi (374,500)
4. Jake Cody (350,000)
5. Christian Harder (345,500)
6. Isaac Haxton (311,000)
7. Allen Cunningham (265,000)
8. John Hennigan (220,000)
9. Noah Schwartz (213,000)
10. Ben Sulsky (180,000)
