Phil Hellmuth’s “subdued” WSOP entrance
At the 2011 World Series of Poker Phil Hellmuth has done practically everything right, considering the Poker Hall of Famer has the Player of the Year award on virtual lockdown, has three runner-up finishes, and even his entrance into the 2011 WSOP Main Event on Saturday was by his standards pretty well done.
Hellmuth has historically made a complete fool of himself during his WSOP Main Event entrances over the years; from coming in as a fighter, to Caesar, to a racecar driver fresh off a crash in the parking lot –yes that actually happened—Hellmuth’s entrances have been attention getting, but also the genesis of ridicule.
This time around Hellmuth decided to show up dressed as an ESPN reporter, a much more subdued outfit than usual, consisting of a black suit, white button-up shirt, and ESPN microphone. Then again, when you set the standard as a horse-drawn Roman Chariot while wearing gleaming 1st century armor, a pink gorilla suit would probably seem subdued.
As far as his play on Day 1c, Hellmuth survived the day but took a huge hit to his stack when he lost with a flush to a rivered full house. But it’s always better to hear Phil describe the hand, so here it is from his Twitter account: “Was at 30k, flopped a flush vs amateurs 10-9, Ac-10c-3c board, 10 on turn, we bet and raised, off suit 9 on river. Down to 8k, sigh …,”
