Poker Set to Descend on Prague

All eyes will be on the quaint city of the Prague as the Czech capital hosts the 12-day long Prague Poker Festival.

With its impressive architecture, Prague is a city steeped in culture and historic tradition. It’s also a popular party destination, with people from all over Europe keen to sample the cheap alcohol and beautiful women.

The festival sees the collaboration of three poker tours in order to provide back to back events– the WPT Prague (Dec 1-5), EPT Prague (Dec 5-10) and GSOP Prague (Dec 8-11). The Prague stop has always been a flagship fixture on the EPT, but this year organisers of rivalling tours have joined forces to offer players a comprehensive poker experience.

As well as the €3,500 WPT, €5,300 EPT and €1,650 GSOP Main Events there will be a whole host of other satellites and side events. High stakes phenomenon Dan “Jungleman” Cates will be following in the footsteps of Tom Dwan by hosting a live $100,000 heads-up challenge on Dec 6. Obnoxious Party Poker pro Tony G is rumoured to be the most interested, but is holding out for an appearance fee.

This is not the first time a city has combined back to back events to induce more players and encourage media attention. London has for many years been the scene of consecutive EPT and WSOPE events, whereas this year Cannes held the WSOPE and Partouche Poker Tour final in the space of two weeks. External organisation PokerTraveller.com has worked extensively to provide players with accommodation and buy-ins for the whole period.

One player who will be attendance is native Martin Staszko, fresh from his second place finish at this year’s WSOP Main Event. Newly crowned world champion Pius Heinz will be making his debut in Team PokerStars colours. However, high stakes legends Phil Ivey, Dwan and Patrik Antonius may be absent after travelling to Macau to take on the notoriously loose Chinese business tycoons.
