PokerNewsBoy presents the 2011 WSOP Awards
With all of the preliminary tournaments out of the way it’s time to hand out the first-ever PokerNewsBoy.com World Series of Poker Awards! Winners were chosen by me (in the most non-scientific selection process of all-time) in a total of six categories:
Comeback Player of the Year – Phil Hellmuth
If talking and ego won bracelets Phil Hellmuth would be a 1,000-time bracelet winner, but as it stands it’s been a while since Phil has done anything notable in the poker world (he hasn’t won anything since 2008), and even though Phil didn’t add to his bracelet total at the WSOP this year, he did put on quite a show, finishing in 2nd place an impressive three times at the 2011 WSOP.
Breakout Performer of the Year – Brian Rast
Rast is one of the most successful poker pros that few people know about, but all that changed after he won his first bracelet in the $1,500 Pot Limit Holdem tournament, followed by a second bracelet win in the high-profile $50k Players Championship. Once the WSOP airs on ESPN, you can look for Rast to jump into the upper echelon of poker players.
Rookie of the Year – Chris Moorman and Ben Lamb
While neither player is technically a Rookie, this award is given to the best young player of the series. Both Moorman and Lamb deserve a PNB award as they currently stand #4 and #2 respectively on the Player of the Year leader-board.
* Moorman cashed 5-times for over $1 million at the 2011 WSOP
* Lamb cashed 4-times for over $1.3 million, including winning his first bracelet, at the 2011 WSOP
Player of the Year – Phil Hellmuth
In addition to his three runner-up finishes Phil also managed to cash two additional times at the 2011 WSOP, putting him way out in front of the field to take home the coveted trophy. It’s also likely Phil will be participating in the WSOP Europe as well considering those events will go towards the POY award.
* $50,000 The Poker Players Championship: 2nd place — $1,063,034
* $1,000 No Limit Hold’em: 28th place — $10,560
* $5,000 No Limit Hold’em – Six Handed: 36th place — $17,270
* $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Championship: 2nd place — $273,233
* $10,000 No Limit Deuce To Seven Draw World Championship: 2nd place — $226,907
Manager of the Year – Antonio Esfandiari
This award is going to the player who contributed most to a fellow player’s victory, and if it wasn’t for Antonio Esfandiari, Brian Rast would not even have been in Las Vegas to play in the $1,500 Pot Limit Holdem tournament –which he won.
Female Player of the Year – Maria Ho
The ladies were very quiet in 2011, but Maria Ho provided some early excitement as she finished in 2nd place in Event #5, a $5k NLHE tournament.
