Vladimir Shchemelev wins WSOP gold in PLO8

wsop bracelet2In 2010 an unknown Russian poker player with a difficult to spell and pronounce name (I’m still not sure on the proper spelling or pronunciation) took the World Series of Poker by storm, making four final tables including a runner-up finish in the $50k Poker Players Championship. Fast forward to the 2013 WSOP and Vladimir Shchemelev can now call himself a WSOP bracelet winner after besting a field of 435 players in Event #46, the $3,000 PLO8 tournament.

Shchemelev’s impressive 2010 WSOP saw him become the first player in WSOP history to make the final table of three events with a buy-in of at least $10,000, and he pocketed well over a million dollars during the series.

Shchemelev has tournament results dating back to before the poker boom, so he is definitely not one of the “young guns” that have come out of Russia in recent years. In fact, even at the age of 40 Shchemelev was one of the younger players with a chance to win gold on Thursday night, as three participants at the final table were players who could play in the Seniors Event at the WSOP: Australian Poker Hall of Famer Mel Judah, “Miami” John Cernuto, and the winner of the Seniors Tournament last year Allyn Jaffrey Shulman.

Cernuto, a legend of the game, was seeking his fourth career WSOP bracelet, and his first since 2002. Miami John is one of the most-liked and respected players in poker, and has been a tournament regular since the mid-1980’s. His career tournament earnings exceed $5 million.

Judah is a two-time bracelet winner (1989 and 1997) and has now finished second in four WSOP events, as well as third in two others. Judah is also a World Poker Tour champion who has made two WPT final tables.

Jaffrey-Shulman was at her third career final table at the WSOP, and was looking for her second bracelet in as many years after winning the Seniors Tournament in 2012. Allyn is the wife of poker player and Cardplayer Magazine owner Barry Shulman: The Shulman’s are the only Husband and Wife bracelet winners in poker. Should Jeff win a bracelet the Shulman’s would likely be the most accomplished family in poker history.

Here is a look at the payouts from the final table of Event #46:

1. Vladimir Shchemelev — $279,094

2. Mel Judah — $172,361

3. Ashly Butler — $124,645

4. Brian Hacker — $91,085

5. John Cernuto — $67,222

6. Tyler Nelson — $50,197

7. Andrey Zaichenko — $37,847

8. Allyn Jaffrey Shulman — $28,821

9. Alexey Makarov — $22,171
