Weisner ends Day 2 of EPT Copenhagen as chip-leader

The PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Championship event in Copenhagen, Denmark ended day 2 of the Main Event with a familiar name in the pole position, Lock Poker Pro Melanie Weisner. Weisner managed to edge out a few other players for the end-of-day chip-lead, and with just 72 players remaining in the tournament she will take a stack of 372k chips into Day 3 on Thursday.

While not a household name in the world of poker, Weisner has been on many people’s “to-Watch” list for the past couple years, as the NYU grad has made a number of deep runs in live poker tournaments, but up to this point has been unable to capture her first major title. Weisner’s potential was first spotted by Full Tilt Poker, where she was a Full Tilt Red Pro with the company up to the Black Friday debacle. A few months ago “Callisto” as she is known in online poker circles decided to join Chris Moorman, Matt Stout, Leo Margets, and the rest of Team LockPRO Elite at Lock Poker.

According to the live reporting team at PokerNews.com, the hand that propelled Weisner into the chip-lead saw her turn a gut-shot straight to outdraw Lars Damgaard Hansen’s flopped two pair (alleged flopped two-pair). Weisner opened with KQ, got two callers, and continuation bet a 9-J-5 flop with only Hansen calling. A beautiful Ten on the turn gave Weisner the nuts and the action again went bet-call. An inconsequential 4 fell on the river, and Hansen probably hoping Weisner would not check behind him decided to fire for the first time in the hand, Weisner made a sizable raise and Hansen called to find out the bad news: Weisner had the stone-cold nuts. The pot was around 175,000 or so, with nearly 100,000 of it coming from Weisner’s opponents.

Weisner wasn’t the only big-name poker player to make it through Day 2 at the EPT Copenhagen, joining her at the tables on Day 3 will be Kevin Iacafono, Mads Wissing, EPT Legend Luca Pagano, Juha Helppi, Michael Tureniec, Pierre Neuville, Johnny Lodden, Steve O’Dwyer, and Mickey “Mement_Mori” Petersen.

Unfortunately for the remaining players in the field, only 48 players will make the money, which should occur sometime on Day 3 Thursday. Day 3 will get started at Noon local time. The winner of the tournament will receive roughly $339,000 in prize-money.
