For the fifth consecutive year the Main Event of the World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open has pulled in over 1,000 entries. The 2013 running is the second largest of all-time, with a total of 1,189 players registering for the $3,500 buy-in NLHE tournament over the course of the two starting flights. The largest Borgata Poker Open Main Event took place in 2011 when 1,313 players took part in the tournament.

Day 1a was much smaller than Day 1b, with just 376 players registering for the tournament on Sunday, while over 800 took part in Monday’s flight, including players who busted on Day 1a that were able to reenter on Day 1b. Of the original starting field of 1,189 entries about 600 or so players are still alive heading into Day 2.

The overall chip-leader heading into Day will be Paul Volpe. Volpe got off to a terrific start to the 2013 tournament season but has cooled off over the past few months. Apparently a return to his East Coast roots was just what the doctor ordered for Volpe who bagged-up over 230k chips on Day 1b. Volpe, along with Day 1a chip-leader Cong Pham both received $5,000 for finishing at the top of their respective leader-boards.

Volpe is joined by a number of other recognizable names near the top of the leader-board including Cherish Andrews, Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy, Nick Frangos, Scott Seiver, and Eric Baldwin.
