WPT Five Diamonds World Poker Classic is underway

One of the biggest poker tournaments of the year takes place in December, when the biggest names in the game head to Las Vegas to compete in one of the flagship tournaments on the World Poker Tour, the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic. The WPT Five Diamonds is one of the few remaining $10k buy-in tournaments, has a long-standing history in the poker world, and being held in sunny, warm, Las Vegas –at one of the strips preeminent casinos, the Bellagio– as the weather turns cold elsewhere around the globe doesn’t hurt either.

This year the WPT Five Diamonds received some unwanted criticism when it was announced that the event would incorporate the increasingly popular reentry format. However, unlike other venues that allows players eliminated on Day 1a to reenter on Day 1b, at the Five Diamonds players will be able to reenter as many times as they please through Level 8 of the event –basically turning the Five Diamonds Main Event into a high-priced rebuy event of sorts.

Many players have voiced their displeasure with the format, stating that it gives players with deeper pockets an unfair advantage, not only because these players will have a huge edge over tournament pros who may only have a single bullet to fire, but also because it might discourage players from trying to satellite their way into the Main Event, knowing that they will only have one chance while big name pros can bust out of the tournament three, four, or five times.

As for the tournament itself, the Season XI version of the WPT Five Diamonds will begin on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 and will run through Sunday, December 9, 2012. The tournament will feature two starting days and late registration, and as mentioned above reentries, will be available through Level 8 of the tournament, which will be the start of Day 2.

As of writing the tournament is on pace to eclipse last year’s turnout of 413 players, considering the event just began and there are already 208 entries on Day 1a –before reentries. And I already see one of the most vocal critics of the reentry format is sting in the tournament, Allen Kessler, who tweeted earlier today that, .@BellagioPoker huge mistake to make this @worlpokertour $10k unlimited reentry. Good for your pocketbook, not good for poker. Later adding, “@MikeSexton_WPT I read your article http://t.co/lglak4lr isn’t @bellagiopoker shunning recreational players with $10k unlimited reentry,” a reference to a blog post written by Sexton earlier today.

However this plays out, it appears that the Doyle Brunson Five Diamonds World Poker Classic is on pace for a terrific turnout, and could very well award a first-place prize for the first time since Season VII in 2009, when the event boasted a $15,000 buy-in.
