WSOP Main Event: 27 remain, 2001 champ in contention

wsop 2013On Sunday 68 players returned to the Rio to play down to the final three tables in the World Series of Poker Main Event. Among the players returning were 2001 Champion Carlos Mortensen; the final woman in the field Jackie Glazier; 2012 October-Niner Steve Gee; and some top-flight talent in JC Tran, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Vladimir Geshkenbein, David Benefield, Jonathan Jaffe, Brett Richey, and Bryan Kaverman.

The day began with a bang as Noah Schwartz ran his Pocket Kings into the Pocket Aces of Jay Farber, crippling Shawartz; a blow he never managed to recover from. Schwartz continued to battle but was eventually eliminated in 52nd place.

One of the bigger stories of the Main Event every year is the Last Woman Standing, and this year that honor went to an established poker pro, Jackie Glazier. Unfortunately for Glazier, her Main Event run would come to an end near the end of the day, when her AQ failed to outrace the Pocket 9’s of Sergio Castellucio. Glazier finished the 2013 WSOP Main Event in 31st place.

So who’s left?

* Carlos Mortensen (10,790,000 chips)

Mortensen could very well be the “most profitable” tournament player in poker history, and is on my short-list of best tournament players of all-time, and soon to be Hall of Famers. His accomplishments speak volumes: 2001 WSOP Main Event Champion; 3-time WPT Champion (including a win in the $25k Championship); two-time bracelet winner; over $10 million in career earnings. A final table appearance would cement Mortensen’s legacy, and a win would pretty much end all debate and prove me right about his standing in the poker hierarchy.

* Steve Gee (3,160,000)

The 2012 Final Table participant is gunning for history, looking to rival Dan Harrington’s 2003/2004 consecutive final table runs. Gee will have a lot of work to do to get there, but what a story he would be at the final table.

* Yevgeniy Timoshenko (5,310,000)

Timoshenko is often overlooked (which isn’t too surprising when you consider the bulk of career has been played online) but he is definitely considered among the best tournament players by his peers. A former WPT, APT, and Irish Open winner, Timoshenko is looking for his first WSOP bracelet.

* JC Tran (11,970,000 chips)

The longtime poker pro is another unbelievably accomplished player, with two WSOP bracelets; a WPT win; eight Top-7 finishes on the WPT; and over $8 million in career tournament earnings.

* David Benefield (1,840,000 chips)

While his live tournament resume may be “lacking” compared to the other players still in the hunt for the Main Event bracelet, Benefield, known as “Raptor”, is one of the best-known high-stakes poker pros in the game.
