WSOP Main Event Day 1a falls short of expectations

wsop 2013Day 1a of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event saw a slight dip in attendance, with the unofficial head-count falling just shy of 1,000 players according to WSOP officials. Considering the overall increase in attendance for the 2013 WSOP the turnout is likely to be a slight disappointment.

Historically, Day 1a of the World Series of Poker Main Event has always seen the lowest turnout, and it’s usually not even close. In 2012 Day 1a pulled in 1,066, Day 1b saw 2,114 players hit the tables, and Day 1c attracted 3,418 players. So, while this year’s Day 1a tally of nearly 1,000 players (unofficially) may be slightly down from last year, the real test will come on Day 1b and 1c, when the starting field more than doubles and triples.

According to the unofficial numbers, 584 players from the Day 1a flight will move on to play in Monday’s Day 2a (Day 1b will play Day 2b on Tuesday and Day 1c will play Day 2c on Wednesday) before the field is combined for the first time on Thursday for Day 3 of the 2013 WSOP Main Event.

Some of the players moving on to Day 2 with large chip-stacks include Dan Fleyshman (82k), Rep Porter (82k), Dominik Nitsche (77k), Ronnie Bardah (75k), Elio Fox (75k), John Hennigan (75k), Scott Fischman (75k), Russell Thomas (68k), Kenny Tran (68k), Steve Gee (66k), and Kyle Cartwright (62k).

In addition to being the least attended, Day 1a generally draws the fewest big names, as most poker pros opt for Day 1c or even Day 1b, but there was some star-power scattered across the Rio on Saturday, including 2012 WSOP Main Event Champion Greg Merson, who bagged-up a healthy 81,650 chips by the end of the night. 2011 Champion Pius Heinz didn’t fare as well, hitting the rail on Day 1a, along with names like Chino Rheem, Mike McDonald, and TJ Cloutier. 2009 Main Event Champion Joe Cada survived Day 1a, moving on with about 26k in chips.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts from Day 1a of the 2013 WSOP Main Event:

1. Evan Panesis — 190,975

2. Nicholas Crisp — 184,075

3. Abdulaziz Almashal — 180,575

4. Sergio Castelluccio — 175,825

5. Michael Wehner — 170,325

6. Jason Manger — 158,150

7. Yucel Eminoglu — 147,425

8. Gal Erlichman — 146,875

9. Scott Wesley — 137,075

10. Jonathan Lane — 137,075

There is still a very long way to go before we know who will be playing for the WSOP Main Event title, as the final nine will not be determined until July 15, a full 10 days of play from the start of the tournament –the final table will take place in November after the now customary hiatus.
