WSOP Notebook: Forced declarations, winners and more

Another busy day at the World Series of Poker saw another player join the growing list of 2012 WSOP bracelet winners, and the first $5k tournament of the year is down to the Elite 8, with a bracelet coming on Sunday. In other news we have our second Twitter controversy of the WSOP, as Jonathan Aguiar and Shawn Daniels, with the WSOP and WSOPTD Twitter accounts getting involved as well!

A new rule means a new controversy

During the WSOP Conference Call prior to the tournament series getting underway, we were informed that the WSOP would be asking players to declare their actions verbally at final tables. Well it seems this has changed a little bit, from asking to requiring, and some poker players were none too happy with that decision.

One player, Jon Aguiar set off a Twitter firestorm after a couple of posts on the topic:

Jonathan Aguiar?@JonAguiar “Should people with social anxiety disorder who don’t feel comfortable talking to people not play @wsop events anymore? @wsoptd”

“the @wsop final table rule required playing to announce every single action and bet is possibly the worst rule in poker history @wsoptd”

Aguiar’s Tweets met some criticism, most notably by Shawn Daniels, who Tweeted:

Shawn Daniels?@SHAWNIVEY_OBV “@JonAguiar @wsop @wsoptd why are you the only one who cries all day every day about everything Adapt and stop sounding like a complete bitch”

When Daniel’s Tweet was retweeted by the WSOP Twitter feed and Jack Effel’s WSOPTD Twitter feed the story turned into a full-fledged controversy with the usual back-and-forth that poker players are notorious for.

Mix-Max Final Day

Four players remain in the $5k NLHE Mix-Max tournament, and the final four includes 2010 November Niner Joseph Cheong. Here is a look at the Heads-Up matchups scheduled for Sunday:

* Semi-Final #1: Warwick Mirzikinian (1,547,500) vs. Aubin Cazals (1,475,000)

* Semi-Final #2: Joseph Cheong (1,567,000) vs. Hugo Lemaire (1,545,000)

The final four in the event are all guaranteed at least $162,443 (both 3rd and 4th place will receive this amount) with 2nd place worth $296,956, and the winner of the tournament set to make $480,564.

One very notable elimination on Saturday was recent WPT $25k Champion and Party Poker pro Marvin Rettenmaier who was eliminated in 5th place, picking up another $68k in prize-money, but falling just short of playing on Sunday and potentially picking up his first WSOP bracelet.

Andy Bloch wins Stud bracelet

Finally, after more than two decades Andy Bloch can now call himself a WSOP bracelet winner after winning the $1,500 Stud 8 or better tournament on Saturday night. For more on Bloch’s historic win you can read our complete report from the tournament HERE.
