Poker Pros Have Twitter Debate On Whether WPT Five Diamond Main E

The WPT Five Diamond Poker Classic is scheduled to take place at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas from December 5 to 10. This is a flagship event on the World Poker Tour (WPT) schedule as this was the very first event that the WPT launched back in 2002.

The WPT Five Diamond Poker Classic attracts the top poker players in the industry as there are millions in guaranteed prize money to be won each year. Some of the winners of the WPT Five Diamond in the past include Daniel Negreanu, Dan Smith, Gus Hansen, Joe Hachem and Antonio Esfandiari.

Twitter Polls Stirs Heated Debate

Allen Kessler who is an accomplished poker pro with $3.5 million in career prize money and 54 WSOP cashes put out a poll on Twitter asking poker pros if they agreed with the current structure of the WPT Five Diamond Main Event or wanted it to be changed.

The Twitter poll had three options for selection: Continue with the current structure which allows unlimited entries, limit it to just 1 re-entry or impose a Freezout which means only 1 entry.

There were 623 people who took the poll and 50 percent of them wanted the current structure to be swapped for a Freezeout. A total of 39 percent were in favour of having 1 re-entry while 11 percent voted for the current structure with unlimited entries to continue. Since the majority wanted the WPT Five Diamond Main Event structure to be changed, Kessler called on the Bellagio and the WPT to make the change.

Kessler Puts Forth Logical Argument

Kessler sent out a number of tweets pointing out that the average poker pro feels intimidated when entering high-stakes events such as the $10,400 WPT Five Diamond Main Event. This is because the unlimited entry structure allows some of the top poker pros like Daniel Negreanu and Brian Rast to keep getting back into the game with multiple buy-ins.

Kessler said that this discouraged average poker pros from participating, as they realized it was a tall feat to beat the likes of Negreanu just once, yet along multiple times in the same event.

However, a number of high-stake poker pros disagreed with Kessler and said that when they make plans to travel and attend a high-stakes event, they want the assurance that they can have a minimum of one re-entry for the time and effort spent.

Poker Pro Daniel Shak who has won more than $4 million in career prize money said that many high stake events such as the WPT Five Diamond Main Event was customized for a specific set of players. Shak said he wasn’t going to play the Main Event and asked Kessler to also opt out, if he had a problem with the structure.

The 2016 WPT Five Diamond Main Event had a total of 791 registrations, which was a new record. James Romero made a name for himself on the poker circuit when he won the Main Event and walked away with $1,938,118 in prize money.
